Human Ear Music is a project of Jason Grier and Julia Holter.

Human Ear Music may have begun as a coffee table book idea, a roving social gathering at a series of Echo Park crashpads, or as a communal recording session in a CalArts painting studio. Whatever it's roots, the idea to assemble the curious and sometimes volatile work of a "very very fancy group of people from Los Angeles who sort of know each other" was, for a number of fairly obvious reasons, fated to become a record label.

In its fits and starts, just what Human Ear Music is and how it operates has never been conventional. Organizational models have been tried on and discarded with the seasons. Above all else, we've been loyal to the idea that Human Ear Music can be a good label that releases unusual(ly good) music.

Jason Grier

Jason Grier founded Human Ear Music in 2006. Along with Julia Holter, he is the main shaper of it's direction.

Julia Holter

Julia Holter joined Human Ear Music within a few weeks of it's opening, and, along with Jason Grier, is the main shaper of it's direction.

Janet Kim

Janet Kim founded the Tiny Creatures record label and art space in 2006, exactly to the day of Human Ear Music's opening. In their first year of operating Tiny Creatures and Human Ear Music have supported a number of adventurous projects in Los Angeles' growing music culture. Janet now manages releases and worldwide distribution for Human Ear Music.

Ariel Rosenberg

In the wake of his newfound and seemingly implausible stardom, Ariel Rosenberg insouciantly lent his cultural cachet to Human Ear Music from the start. He contributes his understanding of the community behind Human Ear Music and his self reliant performing and manufacturing approach to event and release planning.

Claire Cronin

Visual artist Claire Cronin assists with production, distribution and handcrafted packaging.
